Helping whole groups of students read at grade level —while learning English — was worth celebrating this week at Emerald Heights Elementary.

On Thursday, Principal Greg Cleven and Paraeducator Becky Thomas unfurled a banner naming Emerald Heights a “Beacon School.” The recognition came from Imagine Learning, makers of a digital language, literacy and math curricula.

CK Schools began using the program this fall. It offers a research-based, standards aligned curriculum using students’ home languages to help them develop English skills.

“It helps them catch up a little faster,” said Thomas. She has worked with English learners at Emerald Heights for 10 years.

Plus, it can take the guesswork out of what skill each student needs. “I can look at the data and figure out … we really need to work on rhyming, or if there’s just one sound that they need,” Thomas said.

Thomas thought about a student who started the year with almost no confidence in reading to now, reading books out loud to her. And another who jumped two grade levels this year.

“When you see that light go on for them, it’s all cooking,” Thomas said. “That’s the fun part.”
